The Guardian’s diametrical view on Qatar’s World Cup: A Critical Discourse Analysis
Abstract
The present study focuses The Guardian media group for its insertion of diametric ideology in the editorial ‘Sports-washing stains football image’. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar approach has been adopted to study the data. The researcher has limited the study to the transitivity analysis. The design of the study is explanatory sequential mixed-method. The results of the study exhibited that material (28.2%), relational (25.6%) and verbal (20.5%) processes have been frequently used by the author to make and shape an opinion. It is recommended that other approaches of critical discourse analysis be applied to have better understanding of the underlying ideologies and linguistic strategies employed in the sample.
